Hilary Hawkes' Stories

Illustrated by Caroline Crossland and Mary Hall

Hilary Hawkes' Stories are a series of funny and exciting short adventures. Each story captures the author's inimitable, off-beat style and is designed to encourage the enjoyment of reading for everyone. With an established background in writing stories for children and in early years literacy, Hilary Hawkes spins fast-moving, quirky tales in every day language. Even the most book-shy will find these stories compulsive reading – especially children who need a little extra encouragement to read.

The first two Hilary Hawkes titles have been selected for Badger Reading Boxes for Schools (New Titles and Boys Fiction Age 7-9 years).

A Witch Called Rosa

Rosa isn’t just any old witch, she’s the youngest member of the wackiest family of witches that ever moved into Bellway Street. Instead of broomsticks, Rosa’s family fly by vacuum cleaner. And instead of a cat, Rosa’s inseparable companion is her pet pig, Chipolata. When she introduces neighbours – Charlie and Polly – to her mixed up family, they find they’re in the middle of their biggest mix up yet! A Witch Called Rosa is a fast-moving adventure which builds to a nail-biting conclusion that will bring lots of enjoyment to all readers.

Twenty-Nil and other disasters

Breakfast is always chaotic in Jason’s home. Not the best time to try and explain that you have started turning invisible overnight! The events of the rest of the day do not get any more sensible. Jason must rescue his best friend, George, from the clutches of the quiz-show-obsessed Dr Brillbot. Then there’s his sister's football team, who desperately need a hand to avoid another disastrous result they are sure they are heading for that day. And all of this before teatime! Twenty-Nil and other disasters is a hilarious oddball tale that sweeps the reader up on an irresistible roller-coaster adventure, right from page one.

About the Author

World Book Day 2005 – Hilary Hawkes reveals Chipolata secrets...

Hilary Hawkes must have been born a storyteller, because she has been writing stories almost as long as she has been able to hold a pen! Hilary grew up in Fareham in Hampshire and has been a published author since she was nineteen years old. With a degree in English and Publishing, she has worked as an editorial assistant, as a teacher, and now is a busy Mum too. As well as looking after her husband and three sons – and Hattie the dog – she is still writing her wildly funny and somewhat wacky adventure stories. So any similarity between the domestic mayhem experienced by the characters in her stories and Hilary’s own hectic home life is probably not entirely coincidental!
