If you're the smallest basset hound: well, how do you get yourself noticed – especially by Harry, sister Caz and their family? Then how can you track down biscuity treats you're promised but which never arrive? And how do you cope with a world that's been covered in 'cold'? Well, the Bruno way to solve problems is to have a

Bruno is a storybook for children aged 3-6 years (or more!) about a bright little basset hound who has to think his way out of various doggy dilemmas. There are three stories in this first book, all accompanied by beautiful hand-painted illustrations.

In Bruno and the Big Think, Bruno uses some clever tricks to draw attention to himself, despite being the smallest pup in the litter. He's immediately picked out by Harry who takes Bruno home to join his new family. In Bruno and the Biscuits, a mischevious Bruno follows his nose, like all clever dogs, as he tracks down the treats he's been promised by Harry's mum. In Bruno and the Snowy Stuff, Bruno's trying to cope with a world that's been 'covered in cold', as he experiences snow – and a very cold tum – for the very first time.

Creating Bruno

Besides the stories about Bruno, though, there's another big story behind Bruno: how the idea of Bruno was conceived by Pamela Todd and how the book will now help young people around the world with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders ... These first Bruno stories were inspired by a very real basset hound named 'Fred' – a special friend of Dr Pamela Todd, who works with Novo Nordisk in the UK.

First, 'Fred' (aka 'Bruno') cleverly encouraged Pam to write the stories after his enthusiastic antics had helped Pam convalesce after an illness. Pam's wish was that, if published, the stories would help the courageous children she had observed whilst in hospital herself. Next, Guy Hallifax, who has helped put the words to some of TV’s most popular children’s characters, such as Orm and Cheep and Bob the Builder, crafted the stories into these three enjoyable tales. Alison Boyle, renowned for her production work in publishing and for the BBC, then helped to direct the book to its final form. And, finally, award-winning (New Designers Award 2005) young illustrator, Rebecca Sands, herself living with a bleeding disorder, brought Bruno, his friend Harry, and Harry's family, to life with her wonderful and very original illustrations.

Helping children all over the world

There is a further dimension which makes Bruno very special. Both Pam and Guy have kindly donated their authors’ royalties so that Bruno will help young haemophiliac sufferers worldwide. And, with a contribution towards the production costs from Pam's employer, Robinswood has been able to substantially increase the normal royalty level. In the UK, royalties from sales will be donated to The Haemophilia Society. Royalties from sales in the rest of the world will be shared by The Haemophilia Society and the Novo Nordisk Haemophilia Foundation for their work with children in developing countries.
